Video Card Problem

Video Card Problem

Is the system power coming on? Can you hear fans turning and drive motors spinning up, see little lights on the front of the CPU case, hear any beeps? We're talking about system power here, not the monitor power. If the system isn't powering up, or if you aren't sure whether or not it is, go to the Power Supply Failure chart now.

Return to Diagnostic Chart
Does anything at all show up on the screen with the monitor power on, or is it just as black as before you powered on the CPU? We aren't demanding any signs of intelligent life in this case, any sign of life will do.

Return to Diagnostic Chart
Assuming the system power comes up, does the monitor power come on? Most monitors have a status LED on the front bezel that should show green, orange, or blinking if the monitor is powered on. You can also hear most monitors power on with a gentle sound, though I can't describe it beyond saying it's the sound of a CRT tube warming up. Make sure the monitor is plugged into a good outlet by testing the outlet with a lamp or any other device that will prove beyond a doubt that the outlet is good. Make sure that the power cord is either permanently attached at the monitor end or that it is seated fully in the socket, since partial cord insertion is the most common failure for monitors with detachable cords.

Troubleshooting Modem- dial-up won’t connect

Troubleshooting Modem- dial-up won’t connect

The first troubleshooting question for a dial-up modem is, does your modem actually dial the phone? If you have a desktop PC, there should be a little piezoelectric speaker on the modem itself. Many people (and computer vendors) turn does the volume for this in software, which you can find on the “properties” tab of the modems in windows control panel notebook computers will normally run the sound through the notebook speakers, which means the volume controls in windows and the volume dial built into the notebook body must both be turned up.

Return to Diagnostic Chart
Does the ISP answer? You should be able to here the ISP’s modem pick up and whistle and hiss back at your modem through the speaker. If not, make sure you are dialing the right phone number and that the ISP isn’t temporarily down. Just dial the number from a regular phone handset and the ISP modem should pick up and whistle at you.

Return to Diagnostic Chart
Make sure you have the area code and any prefix for an outside line correct, especially if you are dialing from a business. Dial-up lines in a business must have a clean path through a business phone system (PBX - Private Branch exchange), just like fax lines. If the phone is always busy, call the ISP's tech support for help or try one of the other phone numbers they provide. It could simply be that they don't have enough modems available for the traffic in your area at certain times of day.

Repair Install

Repair Install
If XP is corrupted to the point where none of the previous solutions get it to boot, you can do repair install that might work as well as keep the current setting

Make sure you have your valid windows XP key. The whole process takes about half on hour depending on your computer. If you are being prompted for the administrator’s password you need to choose the 2nd repair option, not the first.

  1. Insert and boot from your windows XP CD.

The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications. Choose ‘close’ to terminate the application. Try copying the file from\windows\repair\directory to the one that is in the \windows\system32 directory.

WINDOWS EXPLORER OPENS SEARCH COMPANION RATHER THAN THE FOLDER
If the windows explorer opens up the search companion rather than opening up the actual folder, the default setting for opening a folder is changed.
To correct this:
  1. Start regedit.
  2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DIRECTORY\SHELL.
  3. Edit the default value to be explorer or none.

COMMON CONTROL PANNEL APPLETS
The following are some common control panel applets that are located in the \windows\system32 directory. If you find yourself using any of these frequently, then you can simply make shortcut to then on your desktop.
Appwiz.cpl
Add/remove programs
Desk.cpl
Display properties
Firewall.cpl
Firewall setting

GUEST ONLY NETWORK ACCESS
If you try and connect to an XP computer and are shown a logins screen with only the computer name/guest, you may need to change one of the local security policies:
  1. Go to control panel- administrative tools
  2. Go to local policies- security options
  3. Check the network access: sharing and security model for local accounts
  4. Set it to classic- local users authenticate as themselves

POWEROFF AT SHUTDOWN
If your computer does not turn off the power when dong a shutdown, you may need to edit the registry. I have all the correct BIOS and power settings and still needed to do this.
  1. Start Regedit.
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control panel\desktop.
  3. Edit the key Poweroff active and give it a value of 1.
  4. You can do the same in HKEY_USER\default\control panel\desktop.

REINSTALLING WINDOWS XP
If you need to reinstall windows XP and want to keep all your current installed application and settings:
  1. Start Windows XP.

RUNNING SFC WITHOUT A CD ROM
If you run SFC/SCANNOW and get prompted to insert a CD, there are a couple of changes you might need to make. Slipstream you copy of window XP with the latest service pack you have applied. For detailed UNSTRUCTIONS on how to do this see:

Once these files are on your hard drive, you can simply make a few registry changes to point to those locations
Start Regedit.
Go to the following locations and change the path to wherever you copied the source file.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\windows\current version\setup\service pack source path.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\windows\current version setup\source path the last one might not be necessary.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\windows NT\current version\source path.

REPARING DAMAGED WINSOCK2
The symptoms when winsock2 is damaged show when you try to release a renew the IP address using IPCONFIG. And you get the following error message.
An error occurred while renewing interface ‘internet’. An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. Also internet explorer may give the following error message.
The page cannot be display additionally. You may have no IP address or not automatic private IP addressing (APIPA) address, and you may be receiving IP packets but not sending them. From the XP source files, go to the support/tools directory.

Winsock test method 1
  1. Run ntdiag/test:winsock
  2. The end should say winsock test passed

Winsock test method 2
  1. Run msinfo32.
  2. Click on the + by components.
  3. Click on the by network.
  4. Click on protocol.
  5. There should be 10 sections if the winsock2 key is ok.

MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip

If the names are anything different from those in this list likely winsock2 is corrupted and needs to be repaired. If you have any 3rd party software installed, the name MSAFD may be changed. There should be no fewer than 10 sections.

To repair winsock2
  1. Run Regedit.
  2. Delete the following two registry keys.

HKEY_LOCAK_MACHINE\system\current control set\services\Winsock.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\current control set\service\Winsock

ADD SAFE MODE TO WINDOWS BOOT MENU
When in trouble on windows (not a rarity) you need to boot into the ‘safe mode’, when you have to boot the machine, then pounce on the F8 key to get to the hidden menu etc. Here how to simply add the safe mode to the windows boot menu so you can easily select it while starting your machine.
Some simple steps:-
  1. Right click my computer and choose properties ( or press windows key and break together).
  2. On the advanced tab, click the settings button, which brings up the startup and recovery windows.
  3. Click the edit button, which will open the boot.ini file in notepad.
  4. Look under the [operating system] for your default OS. Copy the entire line, and paste it on the line below.
  5. Change the description in the quotations to say ‘safe mode’ or what ever description you want. Then add the following to the end of the line you just copied: /safeboot: minimal/ SOS/ bootlog.
  6. If you want networking support, then change ‘minimal’ to ‘network’ without the quotes.

That’s it when you boot you’ll see the safe mode listed under your boot menu. Just FYI, here is what my boot.ini file looks like.
[boot loader]
Timeout=5
Default=multi(0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \windows
[operating systems]
Multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \windows=  “Microsoft windows XP professional” /fastdetect
Multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \windows=”safe mode” /safeboot: minimal /sos/ bootlog

Note that the stuff after the “=” sign is the above example is on the next line, boot.ini it should be on the same line. Be careful while editing your boot.ini.

 Thank you

Random Access Memory (RAM)

Random Access Memory (RAM)

  1. Commonly used term of memory is random access memory.
  2. RAM holds temporary instruction and data needed to complete task.
  3. When entire a command from the keyboard, it calls data from a storage device into memory, which can provide data to the CPU quickly.

Types of RAM:-
  1. Static RAM (SRAM)
  2. Dynamic RAM (DRAM)

Types of DRAM:-
  1. Asynchronous Dynamic RAM (A sync DRAM)
  2. Synchronous Dynamic RAM (sync DRAM)

SRAM:-
RAM that holds it data without external refresh, for as long as power is supplied to the circuit. SRAM are used for specific application with in the PC. SRAM is superior then DRAM that’s why it is used for cache memory needs to be very fast and not very large. Advantage of SRAM is does not required, external refresh circuit to keep their data intact. SRAM is faster than DRAM. SRAM is expensive and it takes much more space (4 to 6 transistor).

DRAM:-
DRAM is a type of RAM that only holds it data if it is continuously access by special logic called a refresh circuit. This circuitry reads contains of each memory cell whether the memory cell is being used at that time by the PC or not. All PC’s used DRAM for their main system memory even though it is slower compare to SRAM.

Asynchronous and Synchronous DRAM:-
  1. Conventional DRAM has been used in PC’s seem the original IBM PC days is said to be Asynchronous DRAM.
  2. Async memory is not synchronized with system clock
  3. Its work fine in lower speed memory bus systems but it is not suitable for used in high speed memory system.
  4. The newer type of DRAM is synchronous to the system clock.
  5. All signals are tied to the clock so the timing is much tighter.
  6. It is more suitable to the higher speed memory system of the newest PC.

Access Time:-
  1. When a memory is read or written, this is called memory access.
  2. Modern PC read or write 64 bit at a time, each read or write involves simultaneous access to as many as 64 different DRAM chip.
  3. The amount of time that memory to produce the data, required from the start of the access until when the valid data is available for used is called the memory access time. It is normally measured in neon-second.

Memory Bus:-
  1. It is a set of wire that is used to carry address last data to and from the system RAM.
  2. The memory bus in most PC’s is also shared with processor bus; the memory bus is made up of 2 parts.
    1. Data bus:-
This carried actual memory data within the PC.
    1. Address bus: - It is used to select memory address that the will come from or goes to on a read or write (more band with better the performance) Hz.

RAM types by making (chips)
  • Parity (Show error if RAM is damaged.)
  • ECC (Error correction code)
  • EDO (Extended data out)
  • SDRAM
  • SDRAM2 or DDR
  • DDR2
*    RAM Bus
*    SLDRAM

Parity:-
  1. First memory technology for first PC.
  2. Checks all individual bits for data accuracy.
  3. Slow type of DRAM.
  4. Errors are detected and reported but may cause computer hang and data lose.

ECC:-
  1. Memory technology for server computer.
  2. Error detection and correction.
  3. Capable of detecting individual bit (2, 3, 4) memory error and correct only one bit of error at a time.
  4. ECC generally not used in desktop PCs.

CDO:-
  1. Introduce in 1995 for multi tasking OS and application.
  2. Allows read and write at the same time.
  3. Focus for 64 bit processor.
  4. 10 to 15 % faster access time under multi tasking OS and application.
  5. No error detection and correction facilities.
  6. Suitable only for stand alone PCs.

SDRAM:-

  1. Introduce in 1997 for desktop PC.
  2. Designed to synchronize itself with the time of the CPU.
  3. This memory works with the parallel speed of the CPU.
  4. Faster than earlier memory.
  5. Available in several speeds i.e. 66MHz, PC100, and PC133 etc.

DDR:-
  1. Introduce in 2000 for desktop PC.
  2. SDRAM memory supports one operation per clock cycle, DDR or SDRAM can perform (support to operation per clock cycle).
  3. Over 2/3 of the memory shipped (sell and purchase) in 2003 was DDR.
  4.  Used in many different platform, including desktop PC, server, note books, etc.
  5. DDR memory is selected because of its increase of performance as well as low cost premium over SDRAM.
  6. DDR memory deliveries increased memory band width and performance.
  7. DDR dims have 184 pins.
  8. DDR has different notch compare to other.
  9.  Diagram of notch.
  10. DDR module is not backward compatible.

DDR2:-

  1. DDR memory technology has matured and industry selects DDR2 to be next generation memory technology starting in 2004.
  2. DDR2 memory technology is based upon DDR memory technology.
  3. DDR2 feature faster speed, higher data band width lower power consumption and enhance thermal performance.
  4. DDR2 are available in different platform using different form factor.
  5. DDR2 has 240 pins.

RAM BUS (RDRAM):-
  1. RD RAM chip introduced in 1999 for P4.
  2. Developed by RAM BUS Inc.
  3. Available for only P4 mother board and runs at up to 800 MHz bus speed.
  4. Extra ordinary faster than older memory but was expensive.

Sink Link Dynamic RAM (SLDRAM):-
  1. Developed by other DRAM chip manufacturer as an alternative to RAM bus.
  2. Also focus for P4 and provides almost same feature as RAM Bus DRAM.

Single Inline Memory Module (SIMM):-
1.      Provide single data path.
2.      Available at 30 pins and 72 pins.
3.      Used up to 486 PCs.
4.      Provide 8 bit and 32 bit data output.

Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM):-
  1. Provide double data path and fast than SIMM.
  2. Available at 186 pins for PCs.
  3. Designed for Pentium processor and later used for P2, P3, P4.
  4. Provide 64 bit data output.

Bank Schema:-
  1. Arranging of memory in computers is called banks.
  2. A bank schema is a diagram of rows and column that shows the no. of memory sluts in a system.

Before Upgrading Memory:-
  1. Refer Documentation to Check:-
    1. Bank schema.
    2. No. of memory slot.
    3. Free memory slot.
    4. Exiting memory type and speed.
    5. Memory size and module size.
    6. Compatibility.

Troubles Shooting memory problem:-
Common Memory Problem:-
  • Improper configuration.
  • Improper installation.
  • Defective memory module.
  • Poor quality DRAM chip.
  • Speed mismatch.

Basic Troubleshooting:-
    1. Making sure you have right memory part.
    2. Confirm memory is configured correctly.
    3. Loose connections at slot.
    4. Swap/interchange/ verify memory module.
    5. Clean the slot and verify slot.
    6. Update the DIOS incase of BUG (error).
